Q and A with Gentlemen’s Crow

Florida band, Gentlemen’s Crow, recently released a new album featuring their special Alt-punk, psychedelic rock fused music. BareBones Ent had the opportunity to talk with the band about their style, new album, and much more. Take a gander below and see what all we had to discuss when BareBones Ent met with Gentlemen’s Crow.

BBE:  How would you best describe your music to a potential listener?

GC: We get asked this frequently. I think it’s somewhere within “Alt-Punk Psychedelic Rock.” Recently we’ve been using the slogan “Punk by nature, doomed by design.” Which sounds a bit cryptic but definitely feels right to us.

BBE: You have a pretty unique sound. Is this the type of music that has always interested you, or was this something that developed over time?

GC: I think our sound is a combination of all the genres that four of us have enjoyed. I always wanted to make some form of rock music, but I didn’t expect the sound we have until it was fully realized on recording. so, it definitely developed over time, but the end product is always something we wanted to make, and probably were meant to make.

BBE: As a band what is something that you hear the most from new listeners?

GC: Most new listeners tell us we sound brand new, as in they haven’t heard music like this before in this style. Still not sure if that’s a good or bad thing. We’re still figuring it all out.

BBE: You recently released a new song, “Quandary”, how did this song come together?

GC: “Quandary” came together during quarantine. I spent some time making demos with one of my old friends Kevin Buckley, who drums with a band called Modern Nomad. This was one of those demos. We re-wrote the song with our current line up and added some elements, while also trimming the fat from the song. It came out as one of our favorites and one of the best live songs we have.

BBE: Were there any challenges that you faced when creating this song?

GC: The one challenge we had was the vocal melodies. I think we tried 4 or 5 different ideas, that were all totally different styles. We landed on the final product because it felt like it had the best flow and feel. I also edited the lyrics over and over until the story felt like it had a complete start to finish, although the song is meant to be interpreted as a mystery.

BBE: This song is off of your recently released album, Apparations. How does this song fit in with the rest of the album?

GC: “Quandary” plays second to last on the new album. I think it’s a great track to bring some energy towards the end of the tracklist. We spent so much time organizing the songs in the right order so we could get something that flowed start to finish. Which was a huge challenge because each song is so unique and diverse from the next. “Quandary” definitely serves the other tracks as an upbeat modern rock romp; with some familiar sounds and some stuff you might not expect.

BBE: What has you most excited about the album now that it’s in the wild?

GC: I think just having it out there for people and seeing where it goes in the next 6 months. It feels great to have what we would consider to be a premium product for our current listeners, and for new fans that we meet along the way. Also following up the album with a month-long tour is very exciting, and we really can’t wait to hit the road again. Our last tour was back in September 21′, and it feels like a lifetime ago.

BBE: On release day, what was going through your mind?

GC: Honestly, I didn’t have much to think about on release day. There is much excitement and buildup to release day that when it actually hits it can be surreal and kind of mellow. We had a great response and we had nothing to complain about, but we were really looking forward to our sold-out release show in Jacksonville the next night. We’re all about live performance, and that’s what really sparks us all as musicians.

BBE: How have fans reacted to the new album?

GC: The fan reaction has been great. We had awesome engagement on socials and the streams have been climbing steady since the release. We were grateful for everyone that took time to listen.

BBE: What song off the album are you most excited to play live?

GC: “Did I Get The Picture?” is always the favorite, the crowds just love it. We get amped off by their energy. It always makes for a great song to play early in the set list.

BBE: Now that the album is out, what is next for you?

GC: Next step is continued promotion. Advertising with Facebook, Instagram, Google and Youtube. Following that with a supporting slot on the Roxx Revolt and The Velvets Tour, and then our own album release tour. We have plans to record LP 2 sometime between this summer and next fall, and possibly a follow up single release this spring. The work is just beginning for us at this point.

BBE: What is the best way for fans to follow your updates, and connect with you?

GC: We are mainly an Instagram and Youtube band. Anything you need to know can be found through those two platforms. @gentlemens_crow (Instagram) and Gentlemen’s Crow (Youtube)

BBE: Anything else you would like to add?

GC: Well, I would like to thank you for taking the time and interest to talk with us. It means a lot to all four of us. Otherwise keep streaming the album to anyone out there and know that we believe there is at least one song on our album that someone can connect with. We wrote it for anyone and everyone.
