Oregon’s own Shawn Brown is back with his country and pop influenced style of rock music. BareBones Ent got the chance to sit down with Shawn to discuss his music and latest single. Take a look below and see what all he had to say.
BBE: How would you best describe your music to new listeners?
SB: You know, that’s a funny question because I hear so many references folks put back on me based on what they hear. For me, I hope my new single and recent EP represent that middle ground between the pop/rock of the 90’s and country. That’s what it all sounds like to me anyway.
BBE: What does creating music mean to you?
SB: I just love the process. All of it! There are these distinct and arguably very separate pieces. Writing is its own thing. Pulling something together that sounds like a song is still totally addictive. One minute – there’s nothing. Suddenly…there it is. Making actual records in the studio is then its own, super fun process. Playing with sounds, using the studio as an instrument. Making noise. It’s all an absolute blast. I get just as much from the creating part as I do from the playing live part. I love it all.
BBE: Earlier this month you released a new song, “Road Of Bones”. How did that song come together?
SB: There was this incredibly cool thing that happened in the middle of that darkest period of the Covid lockdown. My friend Rafa Cirne Lima hooked me up with Grecco Buratto and we all started to record some songs I’d be working on. Those first songs turned into The Angel of Oakland EP so we kept going which resulted in The Rain Parade EP. Grecco and I decided to keep going and the next song was “Road of Bones”. So in a way, it’s all just part of one continuous process that we (hopefully) have been getting better at. I do think “Road of Bones” is a different song altogether and is moving in a much different direction than anything else we’ve done up to this point.
BBE: How have fans responded to the song?
SB: I could not have asked for a better response. It’s been crazy! I’d hoped putting the song out right at the start of summer would make sense and it’s turning out to have been a good call.
BBE: Is this song purely a single or is it part of a larger release you can share with us?
SB: “Road of Bones” is actually my very first stand-alone single ever. It’s impossible to say whether it might not end up on a future release, but at this point – it’s purely a single.
BBE: Is “Road Of Bones” part of your concert setlist?
SB: Absolutely! It made its live debut for sure. Folks are already singing along, which is crazy!
BBE: You have some shows coming up throughout the rest of the year. What is a Shawn Brown show like?
SB: Yes indeed, the shows are piling up and the band is sounding rad. Our shows are fun, there’s always a good cross-section of tunes from over the years, with some sneaky covers dropped in there for fun.
BBE: Is the remainder of your year mapped out or are you adding more shows?
SB: There’s a lot of talk about the rest of the year happening as we speak, so I’ll keep you in the loop.
BBE: What is the best way for fans to stay up to date on your news and connect with you?
SB: I think my new Instagram account is probably the best way to stay current. My website too!
BBE: Anything else you would like to add?
SB: I really appreciate you guys giving me some time and supporting “Road of Bones”. Super fun, thanks!
