Q and A with As Within, So Without

New York Metalcore band, As Within, So Without, have been building up a strong community in the metalcore world that they take pride in. With the release of their most recent album, Salvation, they can only expect to see that community continue to grow. BareBones Ent sat down with the band to discuss, their music, the new album, and that community they are building. Check out our group chat below and see what all As Within, So Without had to say when they sat down with BareBones Ent.

BBE: How would you best describe your music to new listeners?

Matthew and Mitchell:  For someone listening to our band for the first time, we would describe our music as relatable and emotionally driven with a hard-hitting atmosphere. We have something for every listener if it is softer singalong pieces or more heavy headbanger-type songs.

BBE: What do you think it is about As Within, So Without that fans connect with?

Matthew: I believe that fans connect with the realness of our music. We write about real emotion. Things that people are going through or have gone through and some of those emotions are very personal to us and that’s why I think it cuts through to more than just a song but a piece of closure for some people or peace with what they have dealt with in the past. This all comes from our hearts and people notice that. When you listen to these songs and read these lyrics, I hope people can find peace in that short moment and reflect that we are in this boat with them.

BBE:  What is something as a band that you feel that you had to learn along the way to get to where you are?

Matthew and Mitchell: That this dream that we have is not gonna be easy to achieve. We all grew up wanting to be in a band and be musicians on stage in front of hundreds and maybe thousands of people. But we had to learn that there is no cookie-cutter way to get to the top. We’re gonna play shows to 5 people or even nobody at times. But we keep striving for those big opportunities where we are able to share our music with more and more people because that one show where only 5-10 people were there and liked us are those same 5-10 people who are bringing their 5-10 friends to the show next time to see us again. It’s definitely not easy to get through in the beginning but it gets better and more rewarding the longer we do this.

BBE: You recently released a new song, “Salvation”, which is such a good song. What message were you wanting to share with that song?

Mitchell: We wrote this song to portray the story to find peace of mind and salvation through hardships and struggle/addiction.

BBE: How have fans reacted to the song?

Matthew: Yeah! We’ve had a bunch of really good feedback on the song and music video and it’s really pushing us into a much better place to keep putting out music that speaks to people. We’ve had a couple of people make reaction videos of the song and we’ve had nothing but good things so far. We really hope to keep spreading “Salvation” across the globe and reach more ears to have someone who has never heard of us enjoy our music or even find safety in the lyrics we’ve written.

BBE: You have a new album, Salvation, out. What information can you give us about the new album?

Matthew and Mitchell: This new album is a big step in the right direction for us. We tried a lot of new things and made this the best album we have put out to date. The raw emotion in songs like “Like The Wind” or “Frostbite” could really resonate with a listener and we still have those heavy hitters like “From The Ashes” and “Visitation”.

This is definitely by far the best work we’ve done and I hope everyone that this album reaches enjoys listening to it as much as we enjoyed making it.

BBE: Is there a song on the album that you are most excited for fans to hear?

Mitchell: Honestly we don’t think one song really outshines another but we’re excited to have people hear the variety that each song brings to the table. If i were to pick one song it would probably be “Frostbite” that I’m most excited for people to listen to.

BBE: Do you have tour plans for 2022?

Matthew: Yes! We have a bunch of things planned for this coming spring and summer and hopefully more stuff to fall into place come fall and wintertime.

BBE: Have any shows you have had in particular that stood out to you as a memorable show? And why?

Mitchell: One of our most memorable shows would probably be our show at the Webster Theater a couple of years back where we managed to be part of a full local lineup to sell out the venue. We got to play to a room full of people in our home state that knew the words to our songs and showed us so much, love. Definitely, an amazing feeling and we loved every second of it.

BBE: For fans coming out to see you for the first time. What would you tell them to expect from an As Within, So Without show?

Matthew and Mitchell: For someone who has never heard of us, I’d tell them that we have something for everyone. We keep our live sets pretty even between the heavy songs and the more singalong pieces. We want every person at the show to be able to enjoy us even if they’re not into the more breakdown-heavy moshing songs we have stuff that is more mellow and easier on the listener’s ears so they can hang out and sing along with us.

BBE: What are your plans following the album release?

Mitchell: We’re already hard at work on a bunch of unannounced projects and you know the writing never stops so people won’t have to wait long till we’re pumping out new music again. Just keep an eye out and you’ll see exciting stuff start rolling in

BBE: What is the best way for fans to follow your band and connect with you?

Matthew: Best way to connect with the band is on Twitter or Instagram which both are @awswband

Along with our TikTok with the same name

And people can keep up to date on all our releases and shows on Facebook. Just look up As Within, So Without, and give us a follow to keep up to date.

BBE: Anything else you would like to add?

Mitchell: I would like to say thank you to everyone who has supported us through our journey so far and welcome to all the new faces to the As Within family! We hope to meet all of you soon your and you all are amazing, and we really appreciate each and every one of you .
