We have been following the career of Taylor Acorn for a good while now and have been so stoked for this release. Taylor Acorn draws people in with the raw, real, and relatable feel of her music. Does Certified Depressant continue that trend? Do we have a certified hit?
“Sticking Around” is such a great way to start off the EP and give listeners a feel for what the EP is going to be like. While taking a tough look at herself the song is upbeat and has that great pop punk/Alt feel to it. I feel like this is going to come up continually through the review but this song is so relatable for people. This leads directly in to the title track.
“Certified Depressant” continues what “Sticking Around” started and stays as an upbeat tune while still taking an in-depth self-reflective look. This is one of my favorite songs on the EP, and just really hits on all cylinders. The EP takes a happier turn with the next song “I Think I’m In Love”, which was released around Valentine’s Day this year. It is a very catchy, and cute love song that was an instant add to our Valentine’s playlist this year when it came out. In the spirit of keeping this review short we’ll jump down a little bit but listen to “Good Enough”. That song hit me so fucking hard and is one of those songs that feels like it was written just for you.
On our way down the EP we come across songs like “Famous Last Words” and “Psycho” (which actually won our fan voted 2022 Song of the Year). Both are fantastic songs. This brings us to “Coma” which features Cassadee Pope on the song. These two’s voices blend so well together, and they work together to release such an awesome song. This will be such a great song to see live. There are so many great vocal spots that would excite a crowd and has those sing-along aspects to it.
The Certified Depressant EP closes up with the song, “Everything Sucks”. This is such a solid way to close out the EP. The song is catchy and has such a great beat to it. I can see people dancing and singing along to this song in their bedrooms, when they have just had a day. The song leaves you wishing there were more songs coming, and that is a great feeling to leave a listener with.
Can I mark down points because I wish this was a full length? In all seriousness, this is one of those EPs that is perfect to me and for me. I loved everything about this EP. It is one of those EPs that comes a long and you feel it was made for you. The songs all hit and are so relatable. I promise you this is one of those EPs that is going to have people coming up to Taylor Acorn and saying it helped them through a dark time and helped them to feel seen. In closing, to answer my earlier question, Certified Depressant is a Certified hit!
