BS: How would you best describe your sound?
PD: We are a hard rock band. Pure and simple. The influences you hear the most are bands like Quicksand, Foo Fighters, Filter, Helmet, Live, and Incubus.
BS: Did this form naturally or has it evolved over time?
PD: The band formed fairly naturally. We have all known each other for a while and have been in different bands together. I decided to start up this new band as a way to channel some energy dealing with relationships I’ve been in and hopefully create something relatable in the process. These songs are personal.
BS: How did you come up with the name Phantom Drive?
PD: The band name refers to an extra gear that some people have and don’t know it until they are under some kind of rare duress. I hadn’t felt motivated to write music in over 15 years since I was in a band called Twice the Sun. We did ok and scored a demo deal with Roadrunner Records. And then things fell apart outside of my control. This project was something I had to do. I had my heart shattered pretty hard. I felt a bunch of songs bubbling up fast. And I honestly missed the comraderie of being in a band. Now I find myself in a place I never thought I would be again. Energized in a way I thought was impossible. It’s like an old spirit returned to give me a push. Hence the name.
BS: How did your EP come together?
PD: It flew out of me. I almost can’t claim credit. It’s like I plucked it out of somewhere where it had already existed. Every one and everything fell into place from the first practice to the recording studio. I just knew I wanted to write guitar riff driven songs with a good groove. I wanted to write breakup songs and I wanted to put them out fast.
BS: If you had to choose one song to play for someone to convince them to check out your band. What would it be and why?
PD: “Say What You Will” and “Brand New” are songs I feel like I always wanted to write. It’s my heart on the page. It’s music I wrote for myself and anyone like me. They have great hooks. Memorable riffs. Heavy in the right spots, and they are about something real.
BS: What are you currently working on?
PD: We just finished our second EP! It’s called Ghosts and the first song off of it will be out very, very soon! It’s the best stuff I’ve ever been involved in. I leaned a lot more on the band and especially our singer, Armando. He has written some of the best melodies I’ve ever heard. Period. Our band is so solid. Our drummer, Alex, is easily the best musician I’ve ever played with and each song is driven by such great beats. Chip and my brother Phil are so in sync and really are the ones that make the sound I was seeking. They’re responsible for the band sounding heavy and grounded. If you like rock music, especially the bands I mentioned before, you are going to really love it.
BS: What is something that fans don’t know about you that might surprise them?
PD: Well, at the time of this interview, it’s all still very new. We are still in the process of booking our first shows. We all have been in a ton of bands. Especially Chip, Armando, and Alex. Fans of their bands will probably be surprised to see them back in a new band!
BS: What has been your most memorable fan experience?
PD: At this point we are still introducing ourselves to people. We all know what it is to love great bands and just want to do our best at putting out music that connects to people. There’s so much great stuff out there. If we can get people to listen to us with all the options they have, then nothing will be more meaningful than that.
BS: What piece of advice or request would you have people that come to see you live?
PD: Come say hi. Tell us what you thought. Check out the music online first so you recognize the music. Bring all your friends!
BS: What’s the best way for fans to get in contact with you?
BS: Anything else you would like to add?
PD: Thank you so much for checking us out!
